Getting Ready to Start Seeds Indoors

Published by hifive at 9:09 pm under Garden Planning and Planting Edit This

Garden planning is well underway here. I think it prevents me from making new year’s resolutions I know I won’t keep.

I went out in the cold garage today and checked my stacks of make-shift seed starter “greenhouses”. I wash and reuse the little plant cell-paks from purchased plants; I pick these up from friends and neighbors who often just toss them in the trash. Peat pellets or peat pots are wonderful in these cake containers, and making your own starter pots from newspaper is even better! For my “greenhouses” I use the plastic cake containers from store-bought cakes . . . I don’t buy these things, but I pick them up after church dinners or other get-togethers. People just toss these perfectly good clear plastic domes in the trash! And they have snap on bases! They make great seed starters, but you have to watch for holes in the bottom tray that might let water drain right through onto your furniture or floor.

I also use aluminum baking pans with clear plastic lids. These reflect light from my sun-starved windows onto the little seedlings, and they are also waterproof. Round or square, I use them all. The square or rectangular ones are perfect for the 1″ starter cubes. A 9″ X 13″ pan will hold 100+ of the little cubes. That’s a lot of tomatoes!
