Garden Planning Has Begun for 2009

Published by hifive at 2:08 pm under Garden Planning and Planting Edit This

My garden catalogs arrived beginning in mid-December, and I have to admit that they are my only reading material when I have a few minutes to sit down.

I enjoy the planning every year. I have my perennials, and some tried and true varieties of flowers and vegetables that I use, but I always check out the new varieties. Every catalog has some new varieties just begging to be planted. Make notes when you see something you want in more than one catalog. Sometimes there are limited seeds for new varieties, and if one supplier is out, you can hurry and order them from another.

I am almost ashamed to admit that I have purchased WAVE petunia plants for the last couple of years instead of starting my own plants. The first year was fantastic and I was hooked! One plant in a container on my deck bloomed profusely all summer long until frost. It was so impressive. Last year was almost as good (even with really excessive rain and humidity and many abrupt weather changes), and I’m sold on this petunia for low maintenance and downright beauty. So this year I am going to start my own seeds. WAVE petunia seeds are typically available in packets of 10 seeds for about $6.  Expensive for my normal seed purchases, but I need something to replace some vinca along a retaining wall, and these will be perfect. Now to choose a color…
